UEFA Champions League Final - AC Milan 2 Liverpool 1

Thursday, May 24, 2007

The buildup to this game was big. Seemingly bigger than usual, not least because of Liverpool's stunning comeback in the Final of the same competition at Istanbul in 2005 (for those of you who don't follow football; AC Milan took a 3-0 halftime lead before spectacularly collapsing in six mad minutes to allow Liverpool to level early in the 2nd half. Match went to extra time before Liverpool won on penalties). Needless the say a large amount of ink and paper was dedicated to stories about AC Milan seeking revenge for what was really quite a humiliating cave-in, and many Milan players understandably regarding that night in Istanbul as a career low and were seeking to make things right.

There's no need for a match report here, they can be found all over the internet on the various football websites and online newspapers, so just a few brief thoughts on the Liverpool team and players who for good or bad, merit a mention. Needless to say, the result sucked from my point of view, but then you win some you lose some. Theres always next season to look forward to. Will follow up with a season review in the next few days.

Defence - Can't be blamed for the 1st goal. How lucky was the deflection off Inzaghi to wrongfoot Reina after he had the freekick covered? Although they looked ponderously square when Kaka passed to Inzaghi (again!) for the 2nd goal. Together with Maschereno, kept the Milan midfield quartet quiet for the most part)

Maschereno - Kept Kaka in his pocket all night until he was subbed when Liverpool was trailing. Which is no mean feat considering Kaka's form over this season, particularly in the Champions League.

Zenden - Awful, awful, awful. He looks, and Benitez has said as much, to be a fantastic all-round nice guy. But in the 3 matches I've seen him play (Chelsea home and away, plus last night) he looked totally out of his depth at this level

Pennant - Tried hard, played very well for the most part. However his first major final obviously brought out the butterflies in his stomach. His passes and crosses, usually his forte, were way off tonight

Kuyt - Ran his socks off, and tries his utmost (and more) for the team (which has endeared him to fans including me). But still feel hes not the top drawer striker Liverpool needs and showed as much tonight (like the the 2006 World Cup). The fact that his 89th minute consolation goal was his first in the Champions League just about says it all. Worth keeping another season though, he might come good (like Drogba).

Rafael Benitez - The manager got the tactics right. Press Milan upfield, through the flanks. And watch Kaka like a hawk in midfield. But he was let down by the limitations of his personnel, particularly the wingers. And when Milan got the huge stroke of luck at the end of the first half, it all came unstuck. Although I might have chosen Crouch to start over Kuyt upfront, and risk Kewell starting to grab a goal (or goals) before subbing him with Zenden if Kewell gets tired or crocked (again!)

On a final note, the ticket allocation for the Final was a disgrace. In a 63,000-seater stadium, each team got 17,000 tickets, 5,000 put on internet ballot and the rest to the "Uefa family" (otherwise known as rich corporate sponsors who for the most part couldn't give a rat's arse about football). Small wonder stories about Milan fans threatening the club for tickets, Liverpool fans fighting for tickets in the streets, people arrested for forgeries and scalpers demanding 4000 Euros for a 200-Euro ticket were rife. UEFA needs to get its head sorted when it comes to ticket distribution at these events. I reckon the real miracle in Athens was not the football, but the fact no-one got killed looking for tickets. - DSM

Looking out for myself

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Some people can be such a joke at times that I don't know if I should laugh or be piss off with them...classic one example my boss. I have been temping for the past 4 months (initially suppose to be a 2 months assignment and it got extended..best part I don't know till when!) and just today she called me in and told me if I would like to do a 6 months contract with them...its a good opportunity right? Let me continue, when the 2 months were up, she told me she hasn't decide what to do with my position and just told me she would extend my period assignment..fair enough so I am still working there till today....however past events make me realise that I have to look out for myself and since I'm a temp staff so why not? So I started to look out for permanent opportunities and I had a few meet ups and because of these meet ups, the consultants wanted to do reference checking (here is very onz about reference checking) and apparently one of them emailed her asking about me. She got a "shock", claimed I should tell her that I had put her down as one of my referees and then told me about the 6 months offer. What the %%^^&&?? Because I acted to secure a better career future then suddenly turned around and offered me a contract? I told her that I'm currently happy with the arrangement and yes, I'm looking out for permanent opportunites...its too bad then because she's not even sincere about the offer at all...looks like I'll just have to wait and see how the situation goes - DSA

Winter is here

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

The winter season made its arrival yesterday with gloomy skies and cold wind blowing and temperature dipping to 15-16 degrees, its gonna get lower during the next few weeks...apparently its going to be a wet winter this year but for us, its no difference coz our offices are bloody cold! Especially for me where I have to wear 2-3 layers as the department area where I'm sitting in is like the "freezer"...every morning now without fail, we will put our towels in the dryer to warm them up (we air them in the balcony every night) since the towels are cold to the touch and for me, I'll turn on the heater in the bathroom...you can't imagine how cold the mornings can be...the heaters now are our best friends *hee hee* - DSA

Work to live...or live to work?

Saturday, May 19, 2007

The email I sent to Angie about the HP employee who died really got me thinking about working, or more accurately, working back in SG. I remember one 5 month period while at my old job that was pretty much like what she described in her blog: 12-hour days (and those were the good days), hounded for tasks repeatedly on a daily basis, huge workload (that should be done by 3 people in 3 totally different positions), lack of support, burnt weekends, worrying about work while on leave, bargaining down 2-day MCs to 1 day due to the fear of what my in-tray will look like after I return from a 2 day absence, and due to my privileged position as an "executive" (sarcasm intended), not getting a single cent of OT in return.

And I wonder: why?

Why do we do it? For money? Professionalism? Fear of being marked off as incompetent, or a slacker? Work experience? For our family to have a better life?

I've often wondered this, during and after that episode I previously described. Why do we sacrifice our health, family and personal well-being to work like that? Is it worth it? Is it worth sacrificing health, time with our loved ones and having a more well-rounded life, for that day (which may never come, by the way) where we supposedly get to "enjoy the fruits of our labour"? Personally, to me, I don't think so. I would rather do it now, to spend more time with the ones I love, doing the things I love, at the cost of leaving slightly more work back at the office. If it means I'll get a bad performance review for being unwilling to put in 12-hour days, if it hinders my promotions, get a little less raise, so be it. I'm happy with my choice. Its worth staying alive and healthy for.

A wise man once said, "I've never met a man who, on his deathbed, said he wished he had spent more time at the office"

When the leaves fall

Friday, May 18, 2007

You know a new season is starting when you talk a walk in the park and you see the leaves scattered on the ground, the mix of yellow and green and the tranquility of the scenery envelopes you...the weather is turning cold and windy and yes, the much needed rainfall that Melbourne craves since there is a water restriction order. But hopefully the water catchment areas are "capturing" the rain water coz if not, then whats the point of raining then, not that the weather is hot to begin with.

Oh yes, about the lottery...we didn't win but well managed to win a Division 6 prize so in all we made a lost of A$8...not too bad at all - DSA

Taking the plunge

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Sick of the Rat Race? Tired of seeing your boss's long face? Feel like burning the pile of work sitting on your in tray? Want to get out of this endless drudgery of work? We've all been there before (I know I have...and very often too). One of the most common solutions is to start earning your own money with your own business. Its a big leap, I know, but its not like no one has done it before. I just happened onto this Blog entry titled "If you Start me Up..." on The Age's (Melbourne newspaper) website, from one who has done it.

Save enough capital/living expenses. Quit your job. Jump into it...

Hopefully, I will be joining him soon...its definitely in my plans :) - DSM

Sometimes I think being such a small country like Singapore can be good for the people, especially when it comes to transport issues. Seriously, the transport system here is crappy. On trains the seats are arranged with people facing one another so you can imagine knees are knocked against one another when you are seated in the inner seats and have to move out when you reached your stations. There's not much standing room and recently there are loads of problems with trains running late, not stopping at stations when packed etc. Driving is the only better option but unless you start off early in the morning then you can avoid the peak hour traffic. Miss the convenience of hopping from one place to another using the MRT/buses; and after experiencing the transport system here, travelling from Pasir Ris to Jurong is like a walk in the park. So being small is not such a bad thing after all isn't it? - DSA

Korean dramas craze

Monday, May 14, 2007

Think I'm pretty slow in catching on the K-Dramas craze. When I went back to Singapore for a week's break in February, my friends recommended me to buy Princess Hours, Full House, My Name is Kim Sam Soon etc to watch so as to entertain myself here since there is virtually no asian shows to watch here unless the once in a blue moon Cantonese shows on SBS channel. I only bought Princess Hours and Full House as my luggage was pretty heavy when we came back and the minute I watched them I got hooked! ..Trust the Koreans to think of something funny and sad in a show, the acting is really hilarious and I really enjoyed watching the shows over and over again. Believe these shows must have been aired on Channel U some time back but being a busy bee at work, there is no time for me to watch any Korean shows...not even Jewel in the Palace..heard that its good but its a very long show..My ger fren Wendy also sent me My Name is Kim Sam Soon (MNIKSS) and Little Bride 18 and Mike and I have just finished watching MNIKSS and we both laughed like crazy! So darn funny...looks like the next trip back home we are bringing back more DVDs then to entertain our mundane lives here :P...-DSA

Mike sent me an email about this lady who died after working on a weekend 8 hours non stop on her laptop, my friend Lynn also mentioned about her recently as well. This lady was just blogging her last post about her stressful worklife in HP...Life is so fragile isn't it? Sometimes I really wonder why do we have to give ourselves so much stress just because of work? Most of the time do we really enjoy what we are doing or because of bread and butter then we succumb ourselves to endless emails, calls, lack of sleep etc and hence miss the important part of life? No matter what, health is more important than work and we all know that work is never ending so why work 12 hours everyday when you know the next day there will be more to come...I guess coming here have taught the both of us to appreciate life more and to slow down in our paces. Both Mike and myself have not done any overtime since we started working here because 1. our bosses don't give us black faces for leaving on time; 2. almost everyone in the office will leave on time; 3.work pace is slower but doesn't mean its less efficient

In Singapore its "expected" for us to do more than we can, to do overtime when there is work but in everything we do, we all have a choice.

So now its time to start living and appreciate life for what its worth - DSA

Feeling a bit sleepy at work now, so not used to working at 7am but have no choice since Mike's work place is just 15 minutes away from mine and he has to start work at 7.15am, thought I might as well update the blog on our daily happenings. Well since we came, we have caught a few comedy acts from the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Believe me, if there is ever a Singapore Comedy Festival, most of the acts will be ban from it. Why, because most the comedians who are good (australians plus international) tend to give satirical views on politicians often being crude but at the same time very funny. Another act to mention was the Jim Henson's Puppet Up! They don't used the puppets we usually see on Sesame Street etc but other puppets they have and the show used audience interaction as the main plot. Really funny and good use of audience to shout out themes and plots for the whole show. Probably the Singapore comedian version is Hossan Leong & Co as their Chestnuts acts are really good as well.

Oh yes, managed to catch Miss Saigon after missing it in Singapore, overall the show was pretty good and it had nice songs in there though I felt that the porportion between Act 1 & 2 was not even. My next musical - Phantom! Hehe...

Yesterday was Mother's Day so though the post is belated, here's wishing our mums a Happy Mother's Day and also to our friends and colleagues who are mummies or mummies to be, a Happy Mother's Day too :) - DSA

Why we serve...or why do we even bother?

Sunday, May 13, 2007

I've said this to many of the people I know when it comes to NS: I'd happily put aside the 2 (used to be 2.5) full-time years, as I honestly do think (despite the warts of the system) that we're contributing something to our country's defence. However, it does feel shitty when you read/hear about this kind of incidents that can befall us during our stints serving the nation and the treatment dished out to NSmen.

What really gets my goat is how they toss you out with just the barest minimum of support (if you can call it that) when something goes wrong. I've experienced it firsthand myself, being struck down by a severe illness requiring hospitalization and my parents being out of pocket by a five-figure sum three months after enlistment.

No, I do not expect parades or (heaven forbid) payouts allowing injured servicemen comfortable lifestyles for the rest of their lives. But $500/month + CSC card for a life forever changed?? We obviously can't afford to pay more for servicemen incapacitated in the line of duty, nor for destitute old folks who spent decades building Singapore to what it is today, yet we can give generous pay hikes to our minsters who were already paid in excess of $1.2 million a year for their "sacrifices".

MM Lee accused Singaporeans who were against the minister pay hikes of lacking a "sense of proportion". Makes you wonder who lacks the sense of proportion, doesn't it? - DSM

One thing after another

Friday, May 04, 2007

oh well, i did say i will write what happened when we moved into the new place...1st thing, our rental place, haiz...i still remember that fateful Saturday when we moved in, packed up our stuff in the old place and moved them to the new place, thank God Mike's friends came and helped us, if not I think our backs will surely break...anyway after moving everything over, we went back to our rental place and cleaned it up till midnight! So it must be cleaned right? But NOOOO...we gave the keys to the rental agent 4 days before the new tenant moved in and we got back our bond money (its a security deposit so that in case we damaged the apartment during our stay, the landlord or agent could claim a portion from the bond) in full so we can assume that everything was alright and in satisfactory order but who knows the bloody tenant claimed the apartment was not clean!! what the $$%%^^^!!! So the agent wanted to claim back the cleaning expense the new tenant had asked a cleaning company to do...we told her NO...hehe till now no news from her yet...so better don't come asking us for money coz we are not giving a single cent! hrrmmppphh

Next, some unfinished matters from the new place...balcony not tiled, leaks above our storage area in the carpark (well I call it the cage coz its really a cage!) but this really takes the cake, noisy party animals just staying in the unit below us! These people actually partied till 4-5am in the morning and to be honest, the walls of aussie homes are really thin...1st time we called the police, 2nd time we shouted from the balcony to ask them to keep quiet, 3rd time we complained to the property developer and finally it got drilled in their heads that they are noisy....oh by the way we just learnt from our friends that the police don't really bother much about burglary or robbery unless a life is taken...geezz...thanks for the security....-DSA
